Röhrig Granit is a company deeply rooted in tradition. With a team of 90 employees, it specializes in the extraction and refinement of natural stone and minerals. It operates two quarries near Heppenheim, Germany, where granodiorite, a mineral rich in feldspar, is extracted. It is a 325-million-year-old material distinguished by its homogeneous composition and crystalline structure. Another quarry in the Odenwald region supplies gneiss, which is especially popular with customers thanks to its red color. In addition to the classic areas of use, the extracted material is refined for a variety of industrial applications at the company’s mineral processing plant.

Diversified for a wide array of business areas

“My father had already decided in the 1960s to produce not only natural quarry stone, but also grit and sand for other applications. His vision helped lay the cornerstone that allowed us to strike new paths at the right time and get ready for future developments,“ says Marco Röhrig, third-generation Managing Director.

Röhrig Granit and its minerals are present in a variety of industries and in the production of special fillers. The company supplies customized aggregates, used in construction chemicals, in the concrete industry and road construction, among others. The products are especially valued for their polishing resistance and luminosity.

“The aspect of luminosity is becoming ever more important in urban development,” Marco Röhrig explains. “In addition, our products contribute to temperature regulation and increase the durability of surfaces.”

Aside from classic road construction, the minerals are also used in the paint, varnish and plaster industry, as well as in ceramics and glass production. Another area of application includes interior fittings, like in decorative surfaces or in interior design for vehicles, where visual appearance and durability play a key role.

Reducing diesel fuel and decibels

Blasting hard rock is part of the daily routine at the Röhrig Granit quarry facility in Heppenheim Sonderbach. After initial pre-crushing with a 6-ton drop ball, the material is fed onto a waiting dump truck via an excavator.

The transport of the blasted rock is a decisive factor in terms of efficiency and cost structure at the facility. Since the cargo tonnages were massively accumulating, around two years ago the facility planned to purchase a new special dump truck to meet the increasing requirements in terms of load volumes and transport weight.

In accordance with the sustainable corporate strategy and EMAS certification, which distinguishes Röhrig Granit as a forerunner in environment and quality management, the project objectives also included the conservation of resources and efficiency enhancement. The conditions turned out to be favorable for the choice of a more advanced dump body system. The matter of energy savings as well as significant noise reduction were to be integrated in the investment from the outset.

With this in mind, and for the benefit of increased transport efficiency, Röhrig Granit opted for a 西瓜视频 Truck Body. This is a specially developed truck body solution optimized for use in mining and quarries. It combines the advantages of high-strength structural steel and rubber to offer a long-lasting, light yet robust structure. The truck body is up to 30% lighter than conventional steel body structures and allows for higher payload capacity per trip. The rubber cladding which is just over 10 cm thick not only reduces noise during unloading, but also noticeably absorbs vibration, which contributes to driver ergonomics straight away. In addition, the reduced weight means lower fuel consumption, which directly translates to recognizable cost savings.

Reduce weight, increase payload

西瓜视频 Truck Body features a dead weight of 6 tons less than conventional steel troughs, allowing for 5 tons more payload per haul. For Röhrig Granit, the advantages were obvious and were directly reflected in the cost development:

“Thanks to the new truck body solution from 西瓜视频, we save around 5 liters of fuel per hour. Given around 2,000 operating hours per year, this leads to savings of about 8,000 liters. These savings will be tremendous for years to come and that was the crucial factor for our investment decision,” explains Marco Röhrig.

The burden on the driver has also been lessened thanks to the new technology. As Röhrig explains, “With the special rubber coating, we have achieved a noise reduction of about 10 decibels. The rubber cladding provides improved ergonomics and protects the driver from intense vibration, above all when unloading the materials in the dump hopper of the first crushing stage. Beyond that, the driver has a better overview of the dump body and the loading.“

Silvio Spiegel, technical sales representative at 西瓜视频, clarifies the design: “The steel structure of 西瓜视频 Truck Body was adapted in such a way to give it a light yet stable design and to subsequently let it transport 10% more payload. To verify this, we as the manufacturer perform load scans during transport at the client on a regular basis. In the process, we also identify optimization measures for loading that we discuss together with the client. We thus diligently address the question of ‘Will the loads be economically and effectively transported to the dump hopper?”

Yet another advantage of 西瓜视频 Truck Body: The flat structure of the dump body offers a lower loading height. This leads to reduced fuel consumption when loading with the excavator, since the boom performs shorter movements. The effects of the 西瓜视频 Truck Body are reflected in the rough day-to-day operations at the quarry: The vehicle operates at reduced noise levels and allows for more sustainable and efficient use of resources. After two years of use, no considerable wear has been yet detected on the dump body or rubber cladding.
